In a recent tweet, I promised to share some pics of our new camera dolly project. For those of you who don’t know, a camera dolly is a platform on which the camera operator and the camera ride for the purpose of creating smooth tracking video shots. There are two basic wheel systems. One system uses large air filled tires to ride along any smooth floor to create these shots. In many cases though, smooth floors are not an option. In these cases it is necessary to lay down a track system for the dolly to ride on. I designed and built our dolly to be a dual purpose system. As you can see from the pictures, our dolly will ride on tracks or on a floor without needing to change out wheels or adding accessories. It also folds up and carries like a suitcase to make it easier to transport.

Here you can see both wheel systems as well as a preview of the track system we're putting together.

As I discovered with my 4 foot camera jib, if it’s easier to transport, I’m more likely to use it. My 8 foot jib lived most of it’s life in the studio and I only used it a few times, since it was so bulky and awkward to transport. The 4 footer travels very well and quite often I keep it in my Jeep, ready to shoot at any moment, anywhere.

This rig is technically called a “doorway dolly” because it can move through doorways, unlike the larger dollies used in video production. My rig has removable panels that allow it to fit through smaller door frames as well.

The use of these rigs helps us create a much higher production value in our videos. Owning these rigs rather than renting also helps us keep our prices lower for our clients.

The track, which you can see in the image to the left, is still in the build phase and is not yet complete. I expect to have 20 feet of track finished this week.

Full Dolly Rig

If you’re curious to see what the dolly and jib footage looks like, you can check out this video tour I created for Saco River Auction recently:

The smooth horizontal camera movements are done with the camera dolly and the vertical movements and wide pans are done using the camera jib. Every shot in this video were done with one of these two rigs.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Let me know if you have any questions.

Back in 2007 one of our model clients Angela brought her friend Derek Lovely to a photo shoot. We managed to get him in front of the camera for some really fun shots of Derek and Angela dancing in a huge open mill space and then some solo shots of Derek in the studio. It was pretty clear right from the start that Derek had a great look and a lot of potential. We sent his photo to the talent agency we had been working with and things progressed from there.

Well, in 2010 Derek was selected as Maine’s Hottest Bachelor by Cosmopolitan Magazine. He just recently appeared on a new TV show called “Love for Sail”. The next episode airs on April 17th so go check him out.

Congrats Derek for keeping at it! We’re proud of you.
